There are many ways to get rid of unwanted or negative energies that linger about. Or maybe you just want to purify yourself or an object before using it in magickal ritual. Here are a few techniques to properly purify, cleanse and consecrate.
Purification and cleansing
The easiest way to cleanse yourself is to take a shower. Use a shower glove or similar item and massage your body with sea-salt. Salt is a natural cleanser and draws out negative energy. Keep an open container like a small chalice with sea-salt in your room for it to absorb negative energy.
You can also draw a ritual bath. Add 1 tsp sea-salt, 1 tsp honey and 1 tsp apple cider vinager as you draw it. Use a new bath sponge and massage away the negative energy. Finish with a quick shower.
Another method is to anoint yourself with a diluted essential oil. Lemon has traditional cleansing properties, frankincense is traditionally associated with spirituality. Be careful with the frankincense oil though, it can irritate the skin if not diluted. Lavendar promotes peace and love, and cypress is traditionally used to bless and consecrate.
Some stones also have purifying properties. Wear a clear quartz or an amber jewel to let the stone absorb the negative energy. Generally clear the stones of energy by letting them soak in sunlight or moonlight, but be careful – some stones will be harmed by exposing them to direct sunlight for too long. Have a look at my Stones & Herbs section to determine how to clear and purify the individual stones.
There are more ways to purify an item. You can let it rest outside on a window pane and let the sun or the full moon purify it. You can pass it through sage smoke nine times. You can wrap it in a container and bury it in the ground for atleast a day.
I’d love to hear about your favourite way to cleanse an object!
To use an item in ritual, it is often best to consecrate it after cleansing it. Cleanse and consecrate all your altar items to get them in “neutral gear” to start with. To consecrate an item, you generally expose it to the four elements. Work a ritual according to your tradition: with or without magick circle or deities. A consecration is best performed on a new moon or full moon.
Light some incense, pour a chalice of water, light a candle and pour some sea-salt into a small container. Let the item pass through all four elements: lay it on the salt for a few moments, pass it through the incense, sprinkle a few drops of water on it and pass it CAREFULLY through/or just above the flame of the lit candle – make sure not to burn yourself or the item (skip this part entirely if object is highly flammable). At each element recite “I consecrate you by [element]”. Holding the object above your head, recite something similar to “I have now consecrated this [item] for ritual use by the help of the elements, may it serve it’s magickal purpose well.” Let the incense burn out and complete the ritual.
